1. The President of the Republic of Maldives, Dr. Mohamed Waheed, is on an official visit to India from 11 to 15 May 2012 at the invitation of the Prime Minister. He is accompanied by Mrs. Ilham Hussain and a high level delegation. 2. This is Dr. Mohamed Waheed's first visit abroad after assuming the office of the President of the Republic of Maldives in February 2012. The President of Maldives is accompanied by the Ministers of Foreign Affairs, Finance and Treasury and Housing and Environment and Minister of State for Foreign Affairs of Maldives and other senior officials.
The Government of Maldives condemns in strongest words the unsubstantiated allegations made by some Senior MDP members in the article published in Open Magazine on 5th May 2012 under the heading "A Coup Made in India?". The allegations made in the article, against the Indian High Commissioner to the Maldives, H. E. Mr. D.M. Mulay is totally baseless and unfounded. The Government and the people of the Maldives has utmost respect for High Commissioner Mulay and his contributions to further strengthening the close bilateral relations between the Maldives and India.
The Republic of Maldives today was elected by the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) of the United Nations to serve a three-year term on the Executive Board of the United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women (UN Women). At the election that was held during the resumed session of the Economic and Social Council, Maldives as a member of the Executive Board will aim to strengthen the work of the organization in meeting the needs of women all around the world. This is the first time that the Maldives has been elected to a functional body of the Economic and Social Council of the United Nations.
The Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, H.E. Ms. Dunya Maumoon, today called the enactment of the Domestic Violence Bill as an important step forward for gender equality and nondiscrimination in the Maldives, and as an early indication of the current Government's commitment to human rights. The Bill is the first to be enacted by H.E. President Mohamed Waheed when he signed it into law on April 23rd as the Preven on of Domes c Violence Act, following parliamentary approval on April 9th.
The Maldives is a group of Atolls in the Indian Ocean with 1192 islands. They stretch for about 820 km from North to South, and are 130 km at the widest point. No island exceeds a length of 7.2 Km or an altitude of 3 meters above sea-level. Approximately 200 islands are inhabited; the rest includes the 87 tourist resorts and uninhabited islands, some of which are used for drying fish or agricultural activities. With an average ground level of 1.5 metres above sea level, it is also the country with the lowest highest point in the world, at 2.3 metres.
